Lawn-to-meadow conversions

Convert your lawn into a beautiful, low-maintenance and ecologically beneficial wildflower meadow.

We’re passionate about helping people turn their yards into beautiful biodeverse spaces.

Why make the change?

The process

Our goal is to create a space that you’ll love and allows you to connect with, observe and support nature.

  • Our first priority is understanding your needs and your vision for the space. Every space is different and we happily accommodate any unique requiements.

  • Once we’ve established the concept for your space we’ll put together a detailed proposal including layout, plant species and work to be completed. Only once every detail is agreed upon will we move forward in scheduling work.

  • Once we’ve finalized your design we get to work removing your lawn and any unwanted vegetation. After prepping your solid we’ll plant young wildflowers and sow seeds across the area.

  • Once everything is in place, it will generally take 4-6 weeks for seedlings to get settled. Depending on the time of the year, you will get blooms out of most species in the first year. In year two you’ll see significant changes as the meadow gets established. Additionally, we’ll be there every step of the way to ensure your garden goes to plan.

A meadow for every space

  • Meadow strips

Not ready to give up the whole lawn? Not a problem. We can create mini-meadows along boulevards, fence edges or anywhere else you have available.

  • Full yard conversions

If you’re ready to jump right in, we are right there with you. Whether you want to go fully wild or have semi-traditional beds we can fill your space with beautiful wildflower that will have local pollinators buzzing.

FAQs

What is the best time of year to plant a wildflower meadow?

Your meadow will have the best chance for success when started in the spring or fall. Planting can stretch into early summer when the weather is mild or if your space has irrigation.

What species do we use in our wildflower meadows?

We focus on planting BC native wildflowers and grasses. However, we are flexible and can easily incorporate non-native (non-invasive) species into your meadow by request.

How much does it cost to convert my lawn to a meadow?

We charge ~$5/sqft with a minimum charge of $1,000. Depending on the condition of the yard, the quality of the soil and the current vegetation, that number can vary.

How long will it take for the flowers to bloom?

If started in the spring, you will start to see flowers blooming in 4-6 weeks. If started in the fall, the flowers will be dormant over the winter and bloom times will vary depending on the species.

How much maintenance does a meadow require?

In the first year, your meadow will require light weeding and regular watering. However, once your meadow is established, it will require little-to-no supplemental watering and a minimum of once a year maintenance.

Is my yard right for a wildflower meadow?

The most important requirement of a wildflower meadow is regular sunlight. While your meadow can be successful in partial sun, full sunlight (6+ hours/day) will produce better results.

Ann - WSLC Client

We recently had our lawn converted to a meadow by Wild Spaces Land Care. This is a bit of a new concept for us, but we just found our lawn kind of boring. Keegan did not disappoint. We had a great time going over our vision of our meadow, the colors, flowers, and special requests on species that can be dried for me to make arrangements. He is knowledgeable and meticulous in getting our meadow ready. I have learned a great deal from him on plants and how to up keep our garden. It was a fun project and we are now enjoying a very nice meadow on our yard. Not only we love it, a lot of bumble bees and butterflies love it too!

“I am so glad I reached out to Keegan! He has turned my overgrown buttercup filled yard into an amazing meadow! The comments I get as I am out admiring Keegan’s handiwork are incredible. I see my boulevard gardens being “oohed and aahed” over all the time!”
